CLARINETIR USER GUIDE

Getting Started:

ClarinetIR™ is a freeware application, which provides network connectivity via infrared (IR) without the hassle and confusion of setting up and/or launching a dial-up network. With few simple clicks, the application can be installed onto your computer(s) and/or device(s) with ease. The uninstall feature also makes removal of application as simple as one, two, and three.

ClarinetIR™ comes in three different formats for three different types of systems. ClarinetIR for Windows PCs are designed mainly for Windows based laptops where the IR port is built-in and enabled by default. ClarinetIR for PocketPC supports Windows CE 3.0 based PocketPC devices. Lastly, the Palm version of ClarinetIR is also available for our users.

The following sections describe how ClarinetIR™ is installed, used and uninstalled for different platforms. For the latest ClarinetIR™ download, information changes, and list of supported platforms please go to http://www.clarinetsys.com.

Personal Computer (PC) and Laptop:

Minimum System Requirement:

Windows 9x/ME/2000/XP.

IR port available and enabled.

Software Installation Procedure:

  1. Start the installation by double-clicking on the ClarinetIR setup file.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  3. Point the EthIR Beam towards your laptop’s IR port. Make sure there are no objects blocking the infrared transmission.

  4. The setup will launch ClarinetIR once the installation is completed.

Product Usage Procedure:

  1. You may launch ClarinetIR at any time by double-clicking on the ClarinetIR icon on the desktop or selecting the ClarinetIR shortcut under
    Start->Programs->Clarinet Systems->ClarinetIR.
  2. Once the connection is established, ClarinetIR will minimize.

  3. To disconnect ClarinetIR, click on ClarinetIR icon on the task bar and the application will maximize.

  4. Click on the Stop button to stop IR communication and close ClarinetIR.

Software Uninstall Procedure:

  1. Close ClarinetIR if it is still running.

  2. Select Uninstall ClarinetIR shortcut under
    Start->Program->Clarinet Systems->ClarinetIR.

  3. Answer Yes to completely uninstall ClarinetIR from your system.

PocketPC Devices:

Minimum System Requirements:

PocketPC 2001 or higher. Device using ARM, SHx or MIPS processor. IR port available and supported by the manufacturer as part of default components. Microsoft ActiveSync 3.0 or higher installed.

Software Installation Procedure:

  1. Connect your PocketPC device with PC using Microsoft ActiveSync.

  2. Start the installation by double-clicking the ClarinetIR for PocketPC setup file.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

  4. PocketPC2002 users must change Connections Setting by going to Start->Settings and click on Connections tab. Click on Connections icon and change the My network card connects to: dropdown box to The Internet.

Product Usage Procedure:

  1. Disconnect your PocketPC device from your PC if it is still connected.

  2. Position your PocketPC device so its IR port is pointing toward the EthIR Beam.

  3. Launch ClarinetIR for PocketPC at any time by click on ClarinetIR shortcut on the Start menu of the PocketPC device.

  4. To disconnect, click on the ClarinetIR icon located at bottom-right corner of Today screen. The application will appear and click on the Disconnect button to stop IR communication.

  5. Click on the X button on the upper-right corner of ClarinetIR window to close the application.

Software Uninstall Procedure:

  1. Close ClarinetIR if it is active.

  2. Connect your PocketPC device with a PC using Microsoft ActiveSync.

  3. On ActiveSync window, select Add/Remove Programs… from Tools menu.

  4. Highlight ClarinetIR on at list of application and click Remove button.

  5. Answer Yes to uninstall ClarinetIR from your PocketPC and system.

Palm devices:

Minimum System Requirements:

Palm OS 3.3 or up.

Software Installation Procedure:

  1. Unzip the ClarinetIR PRC file to the Add-On folder under Palm Desktop. The default location is at C:\Program Files\Palm\Add-On.

  2. Launch your Palm Desktop software and open the Install window by either hitting the F7 function key or by selecting View->Install on the menu bar.

  3. In the Install Tool window, click on Add… button and select the ClarinetIR PRC file unzipped in step one above in the Open window. Click on Open button and then Done button to finish setting up the Palm Desktop.

  4. Start HotSync to complete the Palm installation.

Product Usage Procedure:

  1. Click on ClarinetIR icon on application list screen, ClarinetIR will now be your default network connection.

  2. Launch any application which requires a network connection. ClarinetIR will be the default connection as long as it is not changed in the Preferences.

Software Uninstall Procedure:

  1. In the application list screen, select Delete… (/D) under App menu.

  2. Select and highlight ClarinetIR on the list of installed applications and click on Delete… button.

  3. ClarinetIR PRC file is now removed from your system.
