In many cases, Infrared (IR) technology is a much more practical approach to
wireless networking for office and warehouse. Most PDA and rugged rugged
handheld terminals come with standard with IR capability for capable of beaming
data over short line of sight distances . IR uses a using common handshake
protocol to maintain data confidentiality. No add-on sled needs to be attached
to the handheld device and battery life is unaffected. IR beam devices are
universal eliminating the need for numerous requirement of specialized cradles
for all the different handheld devices found in the enterprise. Since there is no
fragile connector between the handheld device and the infrared access point,
reliability is assured. A single infrared network access point, the EthIR Beam,
can be shared by several users. Therefore, the cost is shared. With its line of
sight feature, IR delivers a very secure connection with no concern of
information leakage and interference to other equipment.

For enterprises where the ruggedized handheld terminals are used, EthIR LAN has been integrated into the cradle used for docking of the rugged rigid terminal to perform network connection while the terminal is charging. The 4Mbps dedicated bandwidth is fast enough more than adequate to update very large application programs and content of each handheld device. |
