To receive the best infrared performance, Clarinet Systems recommends
a PDA which supports 4Mb Fast Infrared (FIR) since FIR delivers
~10 times faster performance than 115Kb Serial Infrared (SIR) found
on many PDAs. The same recommendation applies to tablet PCs, rugged terminals, and other mobile devices.
The FIR function may be listed in PDA spec as IrDA v1.1, or IrDA v1.3, or IrDA FIR, or IrDA 4Mb.
For example, to transfer a 700KB file the ASUS A620/620BT/716 and
HP iPAQ hx4700 PocketPC with FIR through EthIR LAN takes less than 10 seconds. It takes
up to 90 seconds to transfer the same file on a SIR-equipped PDA.
