TO THE ENTERPRISE NETWORK AT COMDEX FALL ’98 IN LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Clarinet Systems, Inc., a technology leader and pioneer in mobile networking solutions, provides a sneak preview, at Comdex Fall ’98, of its advanced and innovative infrared (IR) network access products for connecting portable computers to the corporate enterprise network utilizing the PC’s built-in IR port. The product will be officially announced in Q1, 1999.

The Company’s first product, EthIR LANÔ , implements the IrDAÒ Standard and provides cable-less network connectivity through infrared technology. EthIR LAN is a high-speed infrared and 10/100Base-T switch system that provides Windows 95/98 notebook PCs and Windows CE handheld and palmtop PCs with instant LAN connection without the need for PCMCIA cards, cables or accessories.

Targeted at the rapidly growing market of portable PCs that require access to the corporate enterprise network, EthIR LAN does not compromise the portable PC’s convenience, flexibility, portability or battery life yet delivers high performance at low cost. EthIR LAN provides each user with a dedicated 4Mbps network connection to the enterprise network. This performance is far superior to that provided by IEEE 802.11 compliant RF wireless LANs that provide only 2Mbps of bandwidth which is typically shared by up to 20 users. Also, since EthIR LAN uses the portable PC’s built-in IR port, there is no additional PC hardware to purchase making it an extremely cost effective solution saving large corporations hundreds of thousands of dollars. EthIR LAN will begin shipping in January 1999 and will retail for less than $200.00 per network access port.

EthIR LAN is particularly suited to the new generation of Windows CE handheld PCs which many corporations are deploying throughout their organizations and to the growing numbers of notebook PCs being used in the corporate environment. EthIR LAN fulfills the MIS manager’s dream of seamlessly integrating all notebook, handheld and palmtop PCs into the corporate enterprise network.

The EthIR LAN system comprises the EthIR Switchä , an IR and 10/100Base-T switch and EthIR BeamÒ a desktop infrared LAN access point. Using patent pending technology, the EthIR Switch automatically detects and handles both IR and hardwired 10/100Base-T inputs and provides power to the EthIR Beam over the existing wiring infrastructure. This enables easy integration of handheld and notebook PCs into existing LAN networks which are transformed from "wired" to "dynamically mobile" in minutes.
