Long Island Jewish Medical Center Expands Use of Clarinet Systems’ EthIR LAN Solutions

  http://www.lij.edu

Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ) is one of the largest healthcare industry users of Clarinet Systems’ single and multi-port EthIR LAN wireless infrared network switch solutions. LIJ is an 829-bed teaching hospital serving the greater New York area and Long Island. Over 1,400 affiliated physicians and dentists teach and practice in the hospital’s inpatient and ambulatory care units.

The Clarinet Systems’ installations at LIJ continue to grow and are currently comprised of several hundred ports, consisting of a mix of ESB101 and ESB1000 single-port switches and ESB208 multi-port switches. Clarinet’s EthIR LAN infrared switches are used in conjunction with the Palm OS PDAs employed by medical and administrative staff at LIJ for various mobile medical data functions. All Palm OS PDAs are equipped with IrDA compliant infrared ports as standard factory installed options. The ClarinetIR software utility is used by the LIJ staff to quickly and easily configure the infrared ports on their Palm devices for use with the EthIR LAN switches. The IR-OBEX functionality of the ESB1000 is used to automatically beam information, content and applications to hospital users’ IR-OBEX enabled Palm OS PDA’s. Ease of setup and use, low cost installation and the inherent high security level of infrared point-to-point communications were all key factors in LIJ’s decision to purchase Clarinets’ EthIR LAN solution.

At LIJ, the compact EthIR Beam infrared access points, which come as standard accessories with the EthIR LAN switches, are placed in Plexiglas boxes in administration areas, nurses’ stations, and labs. The Plexiglas boxes also shield and hold the users’ PDAs during the infrared synching operation to ensure that the PDA is not misplaced and that the synching process is not inadvertently interrupted.

LIJ’s medical staff uses the Clarinet EthIR LAN switches with their Palm OS PDAs to run PatientKeeper’s ChargeKeeper application. ChargeKeeper is an enterprise wide mobile computing system developed by PatientKeeper to provide clinicians with the ability to precisely capture patient charges at the point of care.

PatientKeeper, headquartered in Brighton, MA, is one of the leading providers of mobile solutions for patient data management and other healthcare applications. Additional information about PatientKeeper’s ChargeKeeper software, and the company’s other products, can be found at www.patientkeeper.com.
